2012 - 2013 C. Ronald Stephen, M.D. Anesthesia History Essay Contest
C. Ronald Stephen, M.D. (1916 - 2006) was one of the "greatest" of the "Greatest Generation" of anesthesiologists who, beginning in the mid-twentieth century, struggled successfully to establish anesthesiology as a recognized medical specialty. Credited with the first use of halothane in the U. S., he was many times honored as a clinician, teacher, investigator, author, editor, champion of professionalism and enthusiast for the preservation of anesthesia history.
On his death friends and former students established an endowment within the Anesthesia History Association (AHA) to perpetuate his memory and continue the encouragement his favorite activities: teaching the importance of professionalism in anesthesiology, and preserving and teaching the history of anesthesiology.
Thus the AHA has established the C. Ronald Stephen Essay Contest, which is open to all physicians who create the essay during formal training and submit it within up to one year after the completion of the last Residency or Fellowship. A prize of $1000 will go to the winner. In addition local expenses and meeting registration fees will be provided by AHA, but travel reimbursement is not available.
